Course aim

The training meets requirements from Tier 2 of the Dementia Training Standards Framework. The course promotes person centred and strengths-based working with individuals with a diagnosis of dementia.

Course learning objectives

The objectives for this course are:

  • demonstrate an understanding of person-centred care
  • understand the common causes of dementia symptoms
  • understand functional cognition level and the staff role in observation
  • demonstrate an understanding of the stages of dementia
  • identify key care approaches for each dementia stage to promote the highest level of function and best quality of life
  • understand strategies to enhance communication, prevent distress behaviours, and minimise behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia
  • apply strategies to support families
  • review the frameworks of person-centred care and the Allen Cognitive Disabilities Model, which identifies six cognitive levels and describes a person’s functional abilities at each level
  • explore the concept of Precipitating Factors and the internal and external factors that can contribute to distress behaviour
  • examine communication strategies for de-escalating behaviours
  • learn how the Supportive Stance can be used to non-verbally communicate respect for the individual with dementia and maintain safety
  • explore the CPI Crisis Development Model, which includes four levels of an escalating crisis and recommend

Course target group

People working in Adult Social Care and Health who are providing personalised direct care and support to people with dementia.

Course cost

£50 per attendee

These costs will also be incurred for attendees who are classified as a late cancellation, meaning those who cancel their place within 1 week of the course date, or are a ‘no show’ on the day of the course.
